Mobile Health Clinic

Initially launched as a pilot project with Toronto Public Health in 1980, the Mobile Health Clinic Program (MHC) was developed to provide sexual health services onsite to the many immigrant women working in garment factories in Toronto’s downtown core. A Winnebago camper was purchased and retro-fitted into a clinic and was soon on the road with a doctor and counsellor on board. The project was immediately embraced and quickly became a popular service of IWHC; the program soon branched out to partner with and serve other workplaces, agencies, community centres, places of worship, adult learning centres, ESL schools, and settlement organizations.

Quick Facts about the Mobile Health Clinic Program

  • The Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) program is a satellite extension of IWHC
  • The MHC works in partnership with over 50 workplaces, agencies and community groups,
  • It travels to various sites across the City of Toronto
  • It provides sexual healthcare services such as birth control counselling and prescriptions, STI testing and pap tests, as well as referrals for other clinical services. Upon request, MHC visits can be preceded by language-based workshops on our services
  • The original Mobile was replaced in 2005, following a 2-year fundraising campaign by IWHC, its supporters and corporate donors. The new $300,000 Mobile was custom-designed by IWHC staff
  • The current Mobile Health Clinic (pictured above) is 31 feet long and 12 feet high
  • In 2013 and 2014, the MHC saw 906 and 862 clients, respectively. These figures count for approximately 15% (2013) and 13% (2014) of IWHC’s total clients for both years.
